Speaker 1 00:00:20 Hello, survivor squad, Dr. Jen Blanchett here, licensed psychologist and brain injury coach. So I have an announcement. I have been working on an email course for quite some time, hats off to the people that are in this kind of online space who have a brain injury, because all the pieces are hard to put together. I tell you what, but I am happy that I am at the end of it and it’s done. Yay. So I developed an email course that is called what people don’t tell you after a brain injury. So I wanted to put some information together about some of the top themes that survivors talk to me about after an injury.

And I’ll just give you an overview about what I talk about. So the first topic in the course is why am I so overwhelmed? And on this email that I’m looking at, I have a picture of someone’s like post-it notes all over their head and post-it notes behind them. And oftentimes it kind of depicts that overwhelm that many of my survivors talk about. So I talk about why that happens in the nervous system, giving us some ideas about what biologically is happening and how it’s related to your emotion and why it’s really normal, but not it doesn’t if it’s normal yes. In concussion and brain injury, but it doesn’t feel like it should be normal.
Speaker 1 00:02:04 So the feeling of that, the lived sense of overwhelm is not comfortable, but I think understanding why that happens can be very helpful. So I provide some information on that for you. And our second topic is mindset. So many of my podcast, guests talk with us about mindset, how they adjusted their mindset, what their pivot was after their injury to feel like they could make some personal changes and start to recover. And recovery looks different for everyone. So recovery doesn’t always mean that you’re not symptomatic, but a lot of my survivors will say I’m recovered or I’m recovered to where I feel like I can live my life. So I know that’s a lot to think about, but I talk about how you can think about pivoting in what that looks like from a mindset perspective.
Speaker 1 00:03:09 Lastly, we talk about community and finding your people. So this is often overlooked and not prescribed by a doctor or a mental, mental health professional. I think I would say my fellow mental health professionals might talk about community and belonging a little bit more than other folks, especially if we’re looking at the literature and the scientific data that’s coming out on mortality and longevity and social relationships, it is very powerful. I’m talking about more powerful than exercise. And I know they haven’t really looked at this in regard to concussion, uh, and the exercise literature, but for other things it’s pretty compelling. So I think making this part of recommendations could be really helpful. So I talk about typical ways of connecting in the brain injury space, but also maybe some other ideas. If there’s not a brain injury support group near you, which thankfully after the pandemic, not after the pandemic, we’re still in it in 2022.
Speaker 1 00:04:13 But during the pandemic we found that we can connect virtually. So there are virtual options. And I also talk about maybe thinking about those that is the last installment in the email course. So I’m hopeful that you guys will sign up for the email course. So at the time of this recording, it’s may of 22, and I’m releasing this today, tomorrow at the end of the month, we’re gonna have a guest that I interviewed just today. Fred Rutman, who’s talking a little bit about his journey through multiple concussions and that they were due to a medical reason. So he had cardiac issues as well as diabetes, and then subsequently dealt with, I think over 20 concussions, he said, and just his journey through that. And he has some interesting kind of dirty with nutrition, which I, I, you know, I’m not a nutritionist, so I was just open to hearing about it. And I’m gonna dig into some of the things he talked about a little bit before I do the show notes for that one, but I’m interested. I’m very interested in learning some more about that. So that’ll come out on the 20th and then I have some really great guests that are coming on the program in the next month.
Speaker 1 00:06:12 I’m interviewing them rather. And then they will be coming out probably in June, July. And I think we also gonna do a summer series. So if you have any ideas for topics that you’d like me to discuss, whether that be mental health related physical health related boundaries, I talk can talk about a lot of different topics. So those will be some solo episodes that I’ll do. I like to mix it up between guest interviews and solo episodes that I do, or if there’s a guest that you would really like to hear from on the program, certainly write me back. Those emails that come to you from the course will be directly from me. So if you respond to them, I will respond back to you.
